Country house chic Fall’s most alluring trend (at least in the eyes of the Glamour style team) is a confluence of plaids, relaxed layers, and long skirts. It’s dressing as though you decamp to a country house, preferably one in the English countryside, every autumn. Expect traditional markers of heritage style—waxed jackets, checked coats, full skirts, knee-high wellies, tailored blazers—to reign supreme this fall, especially on days when rain is in the forecast. 2. Boho 3.0 Welcome back to the zeitgeist, shabby chic! While the word boho might send you on a stress-induced mental trip back to 2013, fear not: The aesthetic’s third coming has been remixed for 2024, with new takes on crochet, fringe, and flowy fabrics that feel fresher than ever before. Chloé’s standout fall-winter runway provided the main blueprint for the modern take on the look (we’re still dreaming of the wedges front-row guests were given to wear), but Louis Vuitton, Isabel Marant, and Etro are on the same wave. Sienna Miller and Rachel Zoe would approve of these relaxed, worldly pieces in retro florals, rich suede, and faded denim. 3. Glove flats While busier ballet flats are still very much in the mix, designers and style influencers have been influenced by perhaps the simplest silhouette of all: the glove flat. Free from straps, bows, and other embellishments, these shoes aren’t meant to shock—but they can still define an outfit. Take a swing on simple mesh flats like Bottega Veneta, add contrasting footwear for a pop of color à la Marni, or go for a completely tonal look like Bevza. You’ll look effortlessly chic in every scenario. 4. Prep school Preps are so back. This trend is directly tied to Miu Miu’s string of hyperpopular runways culminating in this fall’s collection, which featured models seemingly playing dress-up in their mothers’ ultrapreppy clothes. Full skirts, button-down shirts, leather loafers, sharp blazers, and V-neck sweaters popped up everywhere from Tommy Hilfiger to Victoria Beckham; color palettes largely leaned academic in navy, khaki, burgundy, and gray. The formula is simple: Throw a jacket over a collared shirt, and pair it with relaxed bottoms in the form of jeans or a skirt. (Your school uniform wishes it could have been that cool.) 5. Butter yellow We called it back in February: Butter yellow is the color of the year. The unexpected neutral is pretty much the perfect shade, considering you can pair it with anything—black, white, navy, denim blue, pink—and should please both color lovers and monochromatic dressers. While plenty of designers showed full tonal looks (we’re particularly into Gucci’s buttery suit and JW Anderson’s sculptural sweaterdress), you don’t need to go all-in to experiment with the color. Sprinkle a creamy sweater or bag into your transitional wardrobe; graduate to Abercrombie’s suit set when you’ve fully fallen in love with the color. 6. Structured boots Yes, fall boots are an annual necessity, and you can’t go wrong with any style. But we’re sold specifically on tall, structured styles for fall 2024, following runway appearances at Prada, Chanel, Hermès, Valentino, and plenty of other houses. Whether you prefer something with Western flair (like Zendaya’s Frye boots or a pair with a harness) or something a little more polished (like Everlane’s classic knee-highs), you’ll have the backing of every major label. Not a bad investment, right? 7. Ribbons and bows After reaching their height last winter, bow accessories took a backseat during spring and summer. But they’re back just in time for fall, albeit with an updated outlook. At Prada, Simone Rocha, and Sandy Liang (arguably the originator of the bow trend), bows were used sparingly and featured long ribbon tails. So while bowmania has ended—probably for the best—the accents are here to stay. Exaggerated bows adorn dresses, skirts, and bags this season; use them sparingly, and you’ll be reminded why we all fell in love with them in the first place. 8. T-bar shoes Mary Janes have been popular all year, but we noticed that they’re evolving for fall; T-bar shoes, which feature an extra strap connecting the toe to the cross strap, are poised to take over as one of fall’s biggest shoe trends after featuring heavily at Miu Miu, Ferragamo, and Dries Van Noten. (Everyone from Katie Holmes to Justin Bieber is on board, by the way.) The retro, academic style fits in nicely with the ongoing preppy revival we mentioned above, and it looks great solo or alongside colored tights.
